The 2011 Buick Regal has been named a Top Safety Pick from the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety, besting models from Lexus and Infiniti.

To receive the safety designation, the car had to garner the highest possible “good” ratings in front, side and rear crash tests, along with a new roof-strength test.

General Motors has said it has positioned Buick to compete against Asian luxury brands, leaving Cadillac to take on European brands. The comparable 2010 Lexus IS fell short of a Top Safety Pick by receiving an “acceptable” rating in the rear crash test, while the 2010 Infiniti G35/G37 earned a “marginal” rating in that test.

The competing 2010 Acura TSX also has earned “good” ratings in all the crash tests performed by the nonprofit group, funded by auto insurers. But the TSX has yet to undergo the group’s new roof-strength test.

GM is offering the Regal, which went on sale in May, only in the CXL premium trim level. It starts at $26,995, including a destination charge. GM will introduce the base model in the 2012 model year.

He has a 10-5 record (8-5 when the players voted for the All-Star Game), nine wins in his last 12 decisions, and a respectable 3.85 ERA.

“I didn’t vote for myself, and I told everyone else not to,” Verlander said Thursday in Davison. “I didn’t feel like I was deserving. … I did not feel like I was snubbed. There are other guys with better numbers than me that deserve to go.”

View full sizeDuane Burleson | Associated PressDetroit Tigers starter Justin Verlander pitches against the Washington Nationals in the second inning of an interleague baseball game Wednesday, June 16, 2010, in Detroit.

Nearly 500 fans braved 90-degree heat and a torrential downpour at Jim Waldron Buick-GMC to catch a glimpse of Verlander.

“Well, you know, I feel for them,” Verlander said with a laugh. “Every now and then I have to stand out in the heat and do work.”

Verlander, visiting the dealership for the fourth consecutive year, kindly shook hands and posed for photographs from 1:30-3 p.m., until the last of his eager admirers were led to the lobby where he sat. Verlander starts against division-rival Minnesota at 7:05 p.m. Friday, so he didn’t sign Thursday. Fans received pre-signed 8-by-10 photos.

He wanted to rest his pitching hand in hopes of extending the first-place Tigers’ one-game lead over the Chicago White Sox and 1.5-game edge over the Twins.

Jim Waldron, Jr. said his relationship with Verlander is good for the community and that he enjoys hosting the event every summer.

“It’s about our community, our customers, bringing this kind of excitement to the area,” Waldron, Jr. said as groups clad in Tigers attire cleared his dealership. “That’s the reason we do it. For weeks and months to come, we continuously have customers call us and thank us for bringing him to the community. It’s really about the kids, too. They find so much inspiration and excitement behind these major-league players.”

Said Tigers fan Jay Rendon of Davison: “The most fun part is seeing a big-league ball player. He certainly doesn’t have to do this, but he takes time out and gives back to the fans. Without them, there wouldn’t be baseball.”

Fans choose the All-Star starters, besides pitchers. Peers and managers make that call. However, Verlander feels fan voting could use a little re-tooling.

“Obviously, you want the fans to be involved, it’s for the fans,” he said. “Now, it’s meaningful. It’s home-field advantage in the World Series . It’s huge. I think the Yankees will tell you that.

Hollyn Johnson | The Flint JournalDetroit Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander gives Drew Schultz, 5, of Swartz Creek a high five while meeting Verlander with his family from left, Aimee Schultz, Todd Schultz, and Abbie Schultz, 3, at the Jim Waldron car dealership in Davison Thursday afternoon, July 8, 2010.

“For fans to have that much influence, and for it to mean that much, it’s something that needs to be addressed. For the most part, I think fans are pretty knowledgeable and right. But every now and again, they get something a little bit wrong.”

It has been a peculiar season for Detroit, as it has dealt with a heart-wrenching loss, suspect calls and agonizing injuries. Legendary Tigers broadcaster, Ernie Harwell died May 4. There was a media explosion after Jim Joyce’s now-infamous call June 2 that took a perfect game away from Detroit’s Armando Galarraga. And relief-pitcher Joel Zumaya went down June 29 with a dreadful elbow injury.

“I remember the bad calls,” Verlander said. “There’s always stuff that sticks out — the good, bad, ugly. That’s baseball.”

Verlander cringed slightly when asked to recall Zumaya’s season-ending incident.

“It was tough to watch,” Verlander said. “Especially for a pitcher.”

Verlander credited teammates and said he wasn’t surprised his club has overcome adversity, which includes Max Scherzer, Rick Porcello and Ryan Perry being sent to Triple-A Toledo.

“I don’t think it’s a shock,” Verlander said. “I think it’s a good thing. You never know where you’re going to be, or what’s going to happen. If you play hard every day, you have a chance to win.

“You can’t write teams off because they have two, three rookies in the lineup. You never know how they’re going to do. Guys like Brennan (Boesch) and Austin (Jackson) are showing what they can do.”

General Motors Company Chairman and CEO Ed Whitacre today announced that GM has made its final payment of $5.8 billion to the U.S. Treasury and Export Development Canada, paying back its government loans in full, ahead of schedule.
The announcement came at a ceremony to highlight an investment of $257 million at GM’s Fairfax, Kansas, and Detroit Hamtramck assembly centers. The investment will prepare Fairfax to build the next generation of Chevrolet’s award-winning Malibu, and make Detroit Hamtramck a second source for Malibu, ensuring that Chevrolet can meet market demand for this popular mid-size sedan.
“GM is able to repay the taxpayers in full, with interest, ahead of schedule, because more customers are buying vehicles like the Chevrolet Malibu and Buick LaCrosse we build here in Fairfax,” said Whitacre. “We are now building some of the best cars, trucks, and crossovers we have ever built, and customers are taking note. Our dealers are increasing their sales, we are investing in our plants, and we are restoring and creating jobs.”
The U.S., Canadian, and Ontario governments, as part of the launch of the new GM, provided loans of $8.4 billion and took equity stakes in the new company. Today’s payment of $5.8 billion ($4.7 billion to the U.S. Treasury and $C1.1 billion to Export Development Canada) completes the payback of these loans.
“GM’s ability to pay back the loans ahead of schedule is a sign that our plan is working, and that we are on the right track. It is also an important first step toward allowing our stockholders to reduce their equity investments in GM,” said Whitacre. “We still have much hard work ahead of us, but we are making progress toward our vision of designing, building and selling the world’s best vehicles.
“We appreciate the support the taxpayers have given GM, and our great new products are tangible results of that support.”

January 6th Jim Waldron Buick GMC announced their $50,000 School Challenge program where the School Districts can receive $50,000 in school funds. Due to state cutbacks, we understand that schools are fighting budget cuts. On behalf of Jim Waldron and our employees, we would like to offer your school district the opportunity to receive up to $50,000 for programs that might have been cut due to the current economic climate.

So, what is the Jim Waldron $50,000 School Challenge? We have set guidelines and targeted funds to allow each and every school district the opportunity to receive up to $50,000. Any time someone in your school district purchases a new or used car or truck, or any service is performed at the dealership: oil changes, repairs, tires, body repair, etc., they will receive Waldron Way Points. When point levels are reached for your school district, Jim Waldron, will allocate funds to your school. It’s that simple.

Now, how can you make sure your school district has the opportunity to receive up to $50,000? Anytime you do business with Jim Waldron you earn points for the school of your choice. Then just spread the word to Parent Teacher Organizations, Boosters, Civic organizations, and parents that your school district could receive up to $50,000 from Jim Waldron Buick GMC.

Education is a great investment we cannot afford to loose.
